Analysis: New Mexico a top state for photography career
It might not be surprising to New Mexico residents who are used to the state's incredible landscapes and landmarks. But the national career advice site Zippia has taken notice that New Mexico is a good state to be a photographer.
"Photographers are one of the most common jobs in America. Additionally, a significant number of people work as photographers in every state in the union — it’s not like they are all just concentrated in California or the South," the site said.
Since photographers are such a prominent occupation, Zippia looked at where photographers have it the best. "Where there are plenty of jobs to go around, and people get paid what they deserve during every phase of their career," says the Zippia report.
Zippia dove into the numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to figure out which states have the best opportunities for photographers. After all the numbers were crunched, New Mexico came in No. 3 on the following list.
1) Rhode Island
2) Massachusetts
3) New Mexico
4) Minnesota
5) Missouri
6) New York
7) California
8) Oklahoma
9) Oregon
10) Delaware
The report said the average salary for a photographer in New Mexico is $40,160. That was one of the criteria for the ranking. Other New Mexico-specific criteria looked at total jobs available (290); average entry level salary ($20,410); average experienced salary ($72,800); and a location quotient (or how common a job is) of 0.99.
