Chaos created by Trump seems calculated to begin a civil war

My mother was a French immigrant to the U.S. in 1939. When she died at age 27 in 1942, she was not yet a citizen, but rather classified as a “registered alien.” Involved in World War II, the U.S. had recently incarcerated over 100,000 Japanese-American citizens in internment camps.

After two weeks of Trump’s hostile edicts one wonders: does he wish to start World War III and open new internment camps? He’s happy to bring on a new arms race, deregulate Wall Street banking, and build a useless wall. His travel ban will enrage Muslims, create more ISIS radicals, and alienate most other democracies. I have three teenage granddaughters who can now look forward to a lack of choice and family planning, climate change denial and destruction of the EPA, less access to affordable health care, and, because we are a multiracial family, increased civil rights violations. More jobs? Don’t bet on it. The “change” Trump seems eager to bring worldwide is a fear that the U.S. has gone completely off the rails. Let’s see what that does to the exporting of made-in-America goods.

When I came to Taos 47 years ago, one of my best friends for 20 years was an elderly gentleman, Andrés Martínez. He was a Mormon and a Republican. I was an atheist and a socialist. He loved Ronald Regan. I loved Salvador Allende. For years we worked together, politically, on important water and environmental issues in Taos, and remained devoted allies, never trashing each other’s ideologies. Andrés shared with me all the intimate history and culture of Taos that immeasurably enriched me. When he got macular degeneration, I often read for hours to him the psalms in Spanish from the Bible that he loved. When he died at 92 we both lost a dear friend.

The hostility, divisiveness, and chaos created by Donald Trump seems calculated to begin a civil war and further, horribly, rupture our nation. I cannot believe that as citizens of this country, Democrat or Republican, we will somehow abdicate responsibility to halt this government of arrogant billionaires’ speedy march toward fascism.

Nichols is a writer and has been a resident of Taos since 1969.

Time to suck it up and act like an American and change America within the system our Founders gave us.

What will cause civil war is the Berkley style violence perpetrated by the radical left. The hateful sore losers of radical left who will continuing attacking their fellow man and woman because of who they voted for. This is the only current real time violent and sick "chaos" that the author is in denial about. The hypocritical left loves to preach non-violence, but it is but shallow words. The left will not win a civil war when they have isolated themselves thru violence against honest, hard working Americans. As John Adams said, the war is for hearts and minds... something the left has failed to realize. In the end they will lose....
