Heather Miro goes solo again with salon near Taos Plaza

Hairstylist Heather Miro is once again going solo by opening a new salon in downtown Taos.

Heather Miro Hair Design opened last month at 126-B West Plaza Lane, near the U.S. Bank branch.

Miro began cutting and coloring hair in Taos 15 years ago. After working at salons, she ran her own for eight years. She joined Taos’ Salon X three years ago.

She said she was inspired to branch out on her own again when the space off Taos Plaza became available.

“I wanted to be near the heartbeat of town,” said Miro.

Miro, who has 40 years of experience as a hairstylist, has trained in the U.S. and London with such notables as Paul Brown, of San Francisco, California, and Peter T. of Peter Thomas Hair Design in Berkeley, California, where she did her apprenticeship. She also trained at Jingles in London, where students learned to be teachers of the Jingles method in the U.S., plus Sassoon in San Francisco and Santa Monica, California.

She studied with the American Board of Certified Haircolorists (ABCH), and most recently with Misael Art Studios in Scottsdale, Arizona, in the "advanced art of hair color and movement."

Miro says she wants to re-create many of the positive experiences she has had in some of the favorite places she has worked.

“I want a place where my clients love to come, where they know they can get the kind of service they are looking for,” she said. “If they want change, they can get it. If they want to be safe, they can have it. If they want to play, they can play. One thing for sure is that the journey can go many places in the arena of hairstyle. Of course, I also have enough experience now that I can also say, ‘Maybe that is not such a good idea and let’s think of something else.’”

Miro says her last experience running a salon taught her a great deal about handling the pressures of being in business on her own. “I learned to pace myself and how to gracefully handle my client load,” she said.

Heather Miro Hair Design is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (575) 776-1100 for more information.
