Join us Santa Fe Jan. 21 for women's march
We believe that we must rise up and defend the rights of all: immigrants, Muslims, people of color, people of limited means, the LGBTQ community, and the right of all of us to live on a viable planet. These are all women’s issues.
Political events of the last few weeks, in Washington and across the country, have demonstrated — almost beyond the imagination — how quickly our freedoms, our rights, our protections, and our democracy can be lost. Basic democratic concepts we learned about in civics class and have long taken for granted — freedom of the press, separation of powers, government checks and balances, and separation of church and state — are now very obviously at risk.
Women’s rights are particularly at risk. Hard-fought advances in reproductive health care, gender equity in the workplace, voters’ rights, and freedom from sexual harassment are all in jeopardy. And in the end, women’s rights are human rights.
This weekend, across these United States and abroad, women will march in solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington. We believe that we must rise up and defend the rights of all: immigrants, Muslims, people of color, people of limited means, the LGBTQ community, and the right of all of us to live on a viable planet. These are all women’s issues. As one of the organizers of the event said, “Yes, it’s about feminism. But it’s about more than that: it’s about basic equality for all people.”
In Taos, a small group of very frustrated women is organizing carpools to join the Women’s March on Washington – Santa Fe. Women and friends will mobilize from the Walmart (which has agreed to allow parking in their lots) at 7:30 a.m. to be in place and ready for the 11 a.m. start in Santa Fe. Taoseñas and their friends will gather in Santa Fe near the intersection of Don Gaspar and Galisteo, underneath a “Taos Women and Friends” banner.
Following the event in Santa Fe, we will gather at KTAOS at 4 p.m. to share experiences, build community, and discuss next steps.
Many of us have, for too long, left politics to others, but the stakes are now too high and we must raise our voices and resist the erosion of the democracy we hold dear. We believe that showing our numbers is a first step to saving the country.
Join us — in Santa Fe or in Washington or wherever you may be — on Jan. 21. It is our civic duty.
