Management Corner: Leader as transformer

Posted

Within this series, we have been looking at the transformation of what a leader needs to be in order to be effective now, and in the immediate future. This article is about the final characteristic, the leader being a transformer.

It is about the leader being a change agent, catalyst and alchemist. A transformer is a re-former. Being a transformer means that the person has the ability to change the form of what exists now and change it to a different form. We all have experienced transformation in our life and work. We have transformed from a child to an adult in many ways, some more easily and successfully than others. Most of us have changed jobs and careers, which have required transformation of what we do, how we live and sometimes where we live.

No matter what our political orientation, Mr. Trump is an example of transformation happening. The form of the presidency, our government, country and world is taking on new forms of how things work, or not.

It is important that each of us, at home and at work, take seriously our role as a transformer. As a parent, child, manager or leader in any context, we are called to take on critical new responsibilities, starting with the challenging area of our own life. None of us can afford to sit and wait for things to happen on their own. This means you and I have a lot to do, starting now! Consider these three roles:

• Change agent: An agent is a person who works on behalf of another person, group or community. It is not a time to be self-centered. We are responsible for each other and all of humanity. Being a change agent is about being proactive. Being reactive or non-active won’t work. The leader-transformer is about changing things with purpose and intent. Consider the previous leader characteristics and their intentions to include service, communication, healing and teaching. Our community, environment and world need each of us to do our part.

• Catalyst: A catalyst precipitates an event or makes things happen. We are called to be involved and interactive and in the midst and essence of an evolving revolution of service, care and love of all people — for the people and by the people.

• Alchemist: An alchemist is a person who can transform and create through a seemingly magical process. This happens through our words and actions wherever we are. It is our heart and soul-felt spirit for and with others that makes the difference!
