Management Corner: Leader characteristics for now and the future

Posted

Exploring these 10 characteristics of the series over the last couple of months has been a meaningful personal journey for me. I hope it has been for you, too. Leadership is often a missing element in many areas of our community, nation and world.

Each of us has the right and responsibility to be a leader and support others to be effective leaders wherever we are. The characteristics explored in this series challenge all of us to stretch, learn and become leaders who will face the critical circumstances that are before us today and within our immediate future.

Let’s use these characteristics as a checklist to review our own management and leadership at home and at work. Consider your life and work style. This season of holidays (Holy Days) and New Year celebrations are a good time to assess who we are, how we are doing, who we want to be and what we want to do. Ponder and choose heart-fully. Rate yourself on a scale between one and 10 for both where you are now and what your intentions might be for 2017.

• Altruist: Having a focus on supporting and benefiting others, community and the world is a way of life and doing business.

• Builder: Despite the chaos around you, priorities of the organization and all team members include improving, growing and developing.

• Connector: Synthesizing diverse ideas, people and entities is a primary intent. Creating community, collaboration and teamwork is a part of the mission statement.

• Conceiver: Thinking inside and outside the box is a mandate. Envisioning and manifesting missions and visions is a work style.

• Creator: Having passion, courage and ability to bring into existence that which you love and know to be true, right and best motivates everyone.

• Discoverer: Exploring, probing and finding is a daily routine. Rethinking, creating the fresh, new and relevant enables exciting and continuous evolution.

• Healer: Healing is a heart-and-soul intention. Mending the broken, providing salve for a wound, caring for dis-ease establishes a strong and healthy culture.

• Processor: Making things happen within a structure of boundaries and guidelines gives consistency and sustainability. Coaching and planning with an eye on quality ensures loyal customers.

• Teacher: Sharing insight, inspiration and wisdom nurtures lifelong learning. Providing training, development and support systems diminishes turnover.

• Transformer: Being a change agent, catalyst and alchemist guarantees transformation to higher levels of awareness and mindfulness for all involved.
