Need a break from the kitchen? Eat lunch, help students
Mary Spears of the Taos High School culinary arts program wants hungry Taoseños to know about a unique lunch option in Taos — Edu@Work Café.
The menu, with gluten free options, includes items under categories like “From the Pantry” (Entrees served with bakery fresh breads; green chile corn chowder; traditional Caesar salad served with red chile croutons; apple walnut vinaigrette salad; and a turkey club. There are grilled chicken breast and salmon add-ons for the salads, too.
“Hot off the Griddle” items include a traditional Reuben (corned beef and sauerkraut on rye served with steak fries or choice of salad) and the Southwestern meatloaf topped with red chile, served with homemade mashed potatoes and sauteed veggies and glazed carrots.
If you’re craving something “Fresh off the Grill,” you might go for the classic burger (grass fed beef patty on a homemade whole-wheat bun served with lettuce, tomato, onion and steak fries; the marinated grilled pork loin topped with chipotle mushroom sauce served with mashed potatoes, sauteed veggies and glazed carrots; a grilled salmon fettuccine topped with basil cream sauce with sauteed veggies; or the green chile chicken Alfredo (penne pasta with chicken and green chile served in our freshly made Alfredo sauce).
Drinks and desserts are available as well.
The Edu@Work Café and Taos High Chefs Catering are student-driven businesses to support the culinary program, competition and travel costs for ProStart and SkillsUSA, student career certifications and employment and teacher sponsor stipends.
The proceeds from the cafe are placed in a student account for catering and summer employment for the students and supervising staff. “This allows students to gain experience and earn the operational costs of the culinary program since the school budget doesn’t,” Spears said.
