Pueblo announces plans for holiday ceremonials
One of the ways locals and visitors enjoy Christmas is by attending the Native ceremonials at Taos Pueblo. From the bonfires and Procession of the Virgin on Christmas Eve to the Deer Dance on Christmas Day and more, these traditions have helped create meaningful experiences for all who have witnessed them.
The Taos Pueblo Tourism Director Ilona Spruce has announced the following information for visitors who are planning to attend upcoming holiday ceremonials.
• Christmas Eve, Dec. 24: At 4 p.m. the Vespers services commence at San Geronimo Church on the village plaza. This will be followed approximately at dusk with the Procession of the Virgin Mary and bonfires. Please note that tribal officials with hunting rifles will lead the procession. The weapons will be fired intermittently as the procession continues through the plaza. Although this event is open to the public, all photography and recording is strictly prohibited. Regular hours and entrance fees apply.
• Christmas Day, Dec. 25: The Pueblo will be open to the public at 1 p.m. Deer dances will start after 1 p.m. No photography and/or recording is allowed.
• New Years Day, Jan. 1: The Pueblo will be open to the public at 9 a.m. Turtle dances will be in progress. No photography and/or recording is allowed.
• All Kings Day, Jan. 6: The Pueblo will open to the public at 8 a.m. Buffalo dances will start after 1 p.m. No photography and/or recording is allowed.
“Please do not bring any cameras and/or recording devices into the Pueblo vicinity,” Spruce states. “Such items will be confiscated with no return to owner for violation of our home and community members. The dances of Taos Pueblo are being shared with the intention of our families, friends, and visitors to enjoy a piece of our most precious attributes. Please respect our home and people.”
