School board forum in Costilla set for Jan. 31

Community members in Costilla are hosting an information session to hear from school board candidates in Questa’s competitive race for Position 5.

The session will be held Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the community center in Costilla, located on Highway 196 near the volunteer fire department.

Joel Flory, the incumbent, will be joined by competitor Christy Arguello. Matt Ortega, who is also running for Position 5, was invited but had prior obligations, according to the organizer.

Of principle concern will be questions regarding the candidates’ platform and opinion about the school district’s budget, according to the organizer.

The community of parents and residents in Costilla, and surrounding areas of Amalia and southern Colorado, has been especially active in the last two years ever since the Questa school board floated the idea of closing the Rio Costilla Southwestern Learning Center due to limited funds.
