Snowfall expected to taper off this afternoon

An upper-level storm system that brought rain and snow to much of New Mexico this weekend met with a cold front late Sunday night (Jan. 15), bringing an estimated one to two inches of snow to the town of Taos and two to four inches at Taos Ski Valley.

According to a report by the National Weather Service, snowfall is expected to taper off throughout the afternoon today and tomorrow as drier, warmer conditions are forecast for Wednesday (Jan. 18) and Thursday (Jan. 19).

Minor to moderate rises on the Pecos River and tributaries to the Río Grande are expected to follow the storm, as well as ice accumulations in the northeast part of the state and at elevations above 7,500 feet. No significant flooding is expected.

Law enforcement advises drivers to proceed cautiously, at slower speeds and to avoid driving at higher elevations until the weather clears. In particular, drivers are advised to avoid travel along Interstate 40.

Snow showers are forecast for Friday (Jan. 20) as a "powerful" Pacific jet stream is expected to bring high winds and cold air to the state.
