Taos backcountry areas under avalanche warning
Officials with the Taos Avalanche Center have issued an avalanche warning for the Wheeler Peak and Columbine Hondo Wilderness area in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Northern New Mexico.
"A vigorous winter storm continues to impact the area with heavy snow and strong winds. The avalanche danger is expected to reach high (level 4) in the backcountry on Tuesday," a statement read. "Natural avalanches large enough to bury or kill a person are very likely. Travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended during the warning period."
The warning period is in effect from 6 a.m. Jan. 24 to 6 a.m. Jan. 25.
