Two Taos-area traffic signals out of commission

The Town of Taos and New Mexico Department of Transportation are working to repair two Taos-area traffic signals that were damaged during separate car collisions the morning of March 3.

The first signal – located at the intersection of Paseo del Pueblo Sur and Cruz Alta Road – was damaged when a driver allegedly careened into an electrical box at approximately 6 a.m.

According to Betsy McCullough of Taos Police Department, the driver fled the scene and a Taos County Sheriff's Office deputy gave chase.

"It was a hit-and-run," McCullough said. "I don't believe they have a suspect in custody at this time."

Just a few hours later, at 9 a.m., the traffic signal at the intersection of Paseo del Pueblo Sur and La Posta Road was rendered inoperable when a Waste Management truck allegedly collided into another piece of electrical equipment.

According to reports received at 4 p.m., both traffic signals are still out of order.

Temporary stop signs have been placed at the intersections to assist drivers, who are asked to proceed with caution and treat the areas as they would four-way stops.
