Update: Structure fire ravages Sipapu guest apartments
A fire destroyed an eight-unit guest lodging apartment complex near the base of Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort Dec 16.
The fire was first reported around midday. Officials said two people were treated and released at the scene of the incident and two people were transported to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos. The extent of injuries was not immediately known, nor was the cause of the fire, which is under investigation.
"At approximately 12:30 p.m., smoke was observed coming from the building and was immediately reported to the local fire department, and Taos and Penasco Fire Departments responded," a news release from Sipapu Resort said.
"Sipapu Resort staff are working with guests impacted by the fire to find alternate lodging, in addition to replacing any damaged clothing and necessities. Sipapu's reservations staff will be reaching out to those guests whose reservations are affected to re-book their lodging at Sipapu or area hotels," the release said.
Officials said mountain operations — including chairlifts, terrain, terrain parks, rentals, ski school and the ticket office — remain in operation and are unaffected.
"Sipapu continues normal operations and the ski area will open on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with the ticket office and Riverside Cafe open at 8 a.m.," said the release.
